The year just started, but saw last Wednesday one of the highlights in Casey Cardinia Masters’ event calendar, the Andy Salter Relay at the Springvale venue. The hot days of the weekend moved on, and all athletes were greeted by a pleasant, sunny afternoon.
What makes this event so special is that everyone can participate. It doesn’t matter what your level of fitness is. There was a challenge team, consisting of four runners ( three men & one woman) with a minimum combined age of 180 years, that was going for the fastest time, but all other teams had to guess their time how long it would take them to run or walk the distance. This way, all fun teams had the same chance to win. The winner is the team closest to their estimated time.
The first team members of all teams were sent on their way. 3km for the runners and 2km for the walkers. A handshake at the start / finish line did send the next team members on the course. At this point you could hear already all the speculations about what time was achieved , and if the next team member should be faster or slower. Yes, it’s not easy to run and knowing your pace without a watch, specially if you never did run the course.
Each runner or walker was enthusiastically cheered on by all athletes at the finish line. It didn’t matter to which team the athletes belonged. After the race was finished, the waiting game started. Springvale Masters provided supper which was very much appreciated.
Laura was the fastest girl, and helped with her speedy run that the Casey Cardina Team (Vikram, Andrew and Mesh) won. Unfortunately, 2nd place was not awarded to Casey as there were some misunderstanding about the time keeping which was under investigation.
We would like to thank Mesh & Andrew for organising all the paperwork on the day, making sure times were submitted and everyone knew in which team to run / walk.
Also, thank you to the Springvale venue and all its volunteers to make the event possible.
