On a Chilly Night, Casey Cardinia Masters Brought the Heat at the Hawley Thomas Memorial Relay Event Report by Tracey Hayward

12 September 2024

On a brisk September evening at the East Burwood Masters Venue, athletes from various clubs gathered to compete in the Hawley Thomas Memorial 3x2000 meter relay. Despite the chilly weather, athletes from Casey Cardinia, Doncaster, East Burwood, Knox, Springvale, Eastern Masters, and Croydon showcased their skills and determination. We’re excited to say that Casey Cardinia Masters brought the heat and emerged as the dominant force, with our athletes delivering outstanding performances and securing top positions in both the men's and women's relays.

Let's dive into the highlights:

Women's Relay:

In the women's relay, we fielded a formidable team consisting of Laura Tomic, Lauren Foley, and Tracey Hayward. They showcased their speed and endurance, each completing the 2-kilometer distance with a collective time of 25.07. Laura, who was in top form and flying around the track, emerged as the fastest female athlete of the evening, finishing her leg in an impressive time of 7.06. Lauren also displayed her talent for speed, securing the third-fastest time among the female competitors with a time of 8.40. With six female teams competing, the Casey Cardinia Masters women demonstrated their strength and determination.

Men's Relay:

Our strength continued in the men’s relay with Casey Cardinia Masters clinching first and third place. Casey Team 1 comprising Andrew Moldrich, Andrew Thorpe, and Craig Dodsworth, flew through in first place with a collective time of 20 minutes. Casey Team 2 - Andrew Cutting, Mesh Prasad and Martin K – sailed through to third place with a collective time of 21.32. Casey Team 3 with Rob Italia, Vikram Bhardwaj, and Harry Singh finished a fast and respectable fourth place with a collective time of 22.40. Impressive work in a very strong field of 10 teams!

Very proudly we also had the three fastest males of the evening:

  • Craig Dodsworth led the pack, finishing his leg in a remarkable time of 6.34

  • Andrew Thorpe closely followed with a time of 6.36

  • Andrew Moldrich secured the third-fastest time with 6.50

The Hawley Thomas Memorial Relay event is a testament to the spirit and enthusiasm of the participating clubs. Congratulations to all the participants for their remarkable achievements, and a special shout-out to our teams for their exceptional display of talent and teamwork!
